The whole month of September is dedicated to local traditions, culture, performing arts, music, sports and especially solidarity. This period is called “Settembre Lucchese”.
Settembre Lucchese is organized by the city of Lucca along with committed dozens of voluntary organizations that operate in different areas.
A big series of events animate the historic center and the immediate outskirts of towns.
They start with the Luna Park in Piazzale Don Baroni, which opens its doors for a whole month and in addition to normal programming, it plans special days dedicated to disabled people and children.
The heart of the Settembre Lucchese, stronlgy linked to the tradition and the religiosity of the people, is the Luminara di Santa Croce which is held on the evening of September 13 in the streets of Old Town Lucca, where every building is lit by candles and all the city lights are turned off.
September 14th is the Praise of the Cross Day, celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Martin in the morning.
At the end of this month there is the Feast of St. Michael on September 29.
Next to the religious holiday the history of September in Lucca continues another tradition, the one of markets and fairs, and so in every edition, alongside the classic events of Borgo Giannotti fairs, there are other events such as the exhibition of agriculture and the territory organized by the Chamber of commerce in Piazza San Michele, the antiques market in Piazza Antelminelli, the artiginato fashion in Villa Bottini and Artetica at the Foro Boario.
